- What is a PSA test?
A PSA blood test is a simple blood test used to help screen for prostate cancer. PSA stands for Prostate-Specific Antigen, a protein made in the prostate. The test measures the amount of PSA in the blood. An elevated PSA does not automatically mean cancer, but it does mean that you should
follow-up with your physician to find out why your PSA is higher than normal.
- Who should get screened?
PCP3 recommends screening for men age 40 and up. This recommendation takes into consideration
the higher incidence of prostate cancer and worse survival rates for prostate cancer
that are reported for men in the state of Georgia.
- Who can get screened by PCP3?
PCP3 acknowledges that many men in Georgia are considered at higher risk for prostate cancer
due to race and family history. For this reason, PCP3 will screen any man over the
age of 18 who desires to know their number.
- Is screening free?
Yes! PCP3 provides free, no-cost PSA testing. Insurance information is not required or requested.
- How are results delivered?
PSA results are provided by mail to each participant.
- What happens if my PSA is elevated?
Men with abnormal results receive additional support by our licensed nursing staff
to facilitate follow up with their own primary care physicians or Morehouse Medicine
and other healthcare organizations.
