THE PICKS ARE IN: Morehouse School of Medicine Students Learn their Residency Destination on the way to ‘The Show’
99 % of Eligible Fourth-Year Medical Students Qualify for Residency
ATLANTA – March 19, 2021 – Morehouse School of Medicine is celebrating Match Day 2021 with 99% of eligible fourth-year medical students, 78 in all, successfully matching to residency programs nationwide. More than a third of these future doctors will continue their medical training right here in Georgia and the majority—82%—matched to primary care and core specialties, a reflection of MSM’s training mission.
Match Day, conducted by the National Resident Matching Program, is an annual rite of passage for medical students at schools across the United States and around the world. The 2021 Main Residency Match was the largest in NRMP history. There were 38,106 total positions offered, the most ever, and 35,194 first-year (PGY-1) positions offered, an increase of 928 (2.7%) over 2020. The growth in positions was supported by continued growth in the number of Match-participating programs. A record-high 5,915 programs were part of the Match, 88 more than 2020.
As the world passes the one-year mark of the COVID-19 pandemic, MSM again held a virtual event pulling students together on Zoom and sharing it with family and friends on YouTube. The students chose an NBA-draft theme, which is reflected in the graphics, announcement of matches and other aspects of this year’s event.
“Each of you came to Morehouse School of Medicine imbued with a passion for service and dedication to improving the lives and communities around you,” MSM President and Dean Valerie Montgomery Rice told the students. “You will depart this campus, no matter your destination, uniquely trained to address the challenges we face in ensuring individuals and communities have the necessary services and resources such that they not only see improved health outcomes, but that they reach an optimum level of health. Again, as we continue to weather a global pandemic, one that has touched each of us, and one that has taken countless lives, we need you now more than ever.”
MSM is committed to increasing the number of doctors in Georgia, and especially in rural areas where medical access has been historically limited to promote health equity. MSM students matched to prominent medical centers across the country from California to Massachusetts including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Baylor College of Medicine, University of Texas Medical School, University of Michigan Hospitals, , John Hopkins University, Ohio State University, and Brigham & Women’s Hospital while 13 graduating seniors chose to remain at MSM and serve their residency at Grady Hospital.
