Morehouse School of Medicine Mourns the Loss of Commissioner Emma Darnell
Morehouse School of Medicine mourns the passing of Fulton County Commissioner Emma
Darnell – one of Atlanta’s great civil rights icons. Commissioner Darnell was an exceptional
public servant, a consummate champion for women, minorities, and older adults who
worked tirelessly throughout her career to develop and strengthen anti-discrimination
laws in Atlanta. She was instrumental in prioritizing health equity for all communities
and strongly advocated for programs to address and eliminate health inequities in
Fulton County. She also worked diligently to ensure and protect access to geriatric
health care, mental health services and HIV/AIDS care and treatment at health centers
throughout the county.
"We very much appreciated Commissioner Darnell’s advocacy and leadership in working
with her commission colleagues to support initiatives that enhanced opportunities
to improve the health status of all residents, increased access to critical health
services for all residents, and eliminated health disparities throughout the life
course," said Morehouse School of Medicine President and Dean, Valerie Montgomery
Rice, M.D. "She will be missed. The entire Morehouse School of Medicine family extends
our deepest sympathy to her family."
