Morehouse School of Medicine Match Day 2025: Celebrating Our Future Physicians
A Milestone Achievement for Future Physicians
On Friday, March 21, 2025, Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) gathered to celebrate one of the most significant moments in a medical student’s journey: Match Day. This annual event marks the transition from medical school to residency training, as students discover where they will continue their medical education. Held on MSM’s campus, the event was a joyful occasion for students, their families, faculty and invited guests. For those unable to attend in person, the ceremony was livestreamed on MSM’s YouTube Channel, ensuring that loved ones from all over could share in the excitement.
Match Day 2025: By the Numbers
This year, 92 MSM Doctor of Medicine students participated in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The results displayed MSM’s continued excellence in medical education:
- 90% of students matched into residency programs.
- 72% secured their first or only choice of specialty.
- 45% of the Class of 2025 matched into primary care specialties such as family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics.
- When core specialty disciplines like emergency medicine, general surgery and psychiatry were included, the percentage rose to 61%.
- 39% of students will complete their residencies in Georgia, reinforcing MSM’s commitment to addressing healthcare disparities in the state.
- 15% of students matched with residency programs at MSM, continuing their training within the institution.
The Match Process: A Journey to Residency
Match Day is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. The process begins in the final year of medical school, as students apply to residency programs and participate in interviews. After ranking their preferred programs, students await the results of a computerized matching system, which pairs them with residency programs based on mutual preferences. This system, established in 1952 by the NRMP, ensures a fair and transparent process for all applicants.
