A Lifetime of Leadership: Ambassador Andrew Young to Receive Vanguard Award at 15th Annual Hugh M. Gloster Celebration
Morehouse School of Medicine is honored to present Ambassador Andrew Young with the
prestigious Louis C. Brown Vanguard Award at the 15th Annual Hugh M. Gloster Society
Celebration. This award recognizes pioneering leaders whose extraordinary vision,
exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment have significantly advanced the health
and well-being of vulnerable and underserved communities.
Ambassador Young’s legacy of service spans more than six decades, encompassing roles as a civil rights leader, U.S. Congressman, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and two-term Mayor of Atlanta. As a key strategist and negotiator during the Civil Rights Movement, Young played an instrumental role in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 — landmark legislation that expanded access to health care, education and economic opportunities for historically marginalized communities.
During his tenure as Mayor of Atlanta, Young spearheaded initiatives that attracted billions of dollars in investments, generated over a million jobs and improved infrastructure — enhancing access to healthcare services for many. His leadership helped establish Atlanta as a global city while ensuring that economic growth helped communities in need. He also championed public health initiatives, recognizing that economic empowerment and health equity are intrinsically linked.
Ambassador Young’s advocacy for education and healthcare extends to Morehouse School of Medicine, where his leadership has supported efforts to expand medical training opportunities and increase access to quality health care. Through his work with the Andrew J. Young Foundation, he has advanced initiatives focused on health equity, economic justice and global development — aligning closely with MSM’s mission to serve the underserved.
For his lifelong dedication to justice, diplomacy and human rights, Ambassador Young has received more than 100 honorary degrees and numerous accolades, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the NAACP Spingarn Medal. His leadership continues to inspire future generations to champion social change, health equity and global progress.
Morehouse School of Medicine proudly celebrates Ambassador Andrew Young’s indelible contributions to civil rights, public service and health equity. His visionary leadership embodies the spirit of the Louis C. Brown Vanguard Award, and we are honored to recognize his enduring impact on communities worldwide.
The Hugh M. Gloster Society and the 50th Anniversary Celebration
In recognition of the power of philanthropy, MSM established the Hugh M. Gloster Society in 2007 to honor donors who contribute $1,000 or more annually. Named after one of MSM’s esteemed founders, the Gloster Society plays a pivotal role in sustaining scholarships and advancing the institution’s mission.
This year’s 15th Annual Gloster Society Celebration will mark MSM’s 50th Anniversary with an unforgettable evening at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, featuring the Vanguard Award, the Health Equity IMPACT Awards and performances by Babyface and Doug E. Fresh.
