Multidisciplinary Clinical and Translational Research (MCTR) Certificate Program
The development of this program addresses the needs of a wide variety of trainees who will be part of multidisciplinary research teams and would benefit from MCTR training that is not currently provided by the CRECD program at MSM.
Description: The certificate program will enroll 10 minority candidates (including 6 predocs)
from very diverse backgrounds for training that will be delivered as a six-week summer
program each year for two consecutive years. at the end of which successful candidates
will be issued with a certificate. A new clinical and translational research colloquium
(described below) will be introduced and tailored towards the goals of the certificate
program. Courses, clinical and translational research (CTR) colloquium (workshops,
seminars and journal clubs) will be delivered in the evenings and on weekends in 3-hour
modules. The decision to offer the MSCR program in the evening and weekend was based
on the results of the needs assessment survey conducted among the potential participants
and recommendation of the CRECD program committee. The weekends will be dedicated
to CTR colloquium over the entire two summers of training. Mondays to Fridays for
the entire training period will be devoted to very basic core didactic courses vital
to clinical and translational research, except for the Friday evenings of the second
summer which will be devoted to a Clinical Research Core laboratory rotation at the
clinical research center at MSM.
A minimum of 16 credits will be required to obtain the certificate, which will be
awarded by MSM. For candidates who want to pursue the more advanced CRECD/MSCR degree,
the credits from the certificate program can be transferred, thus reducing the time
of completion for the degree program. Core courses and electives will be taught by
faculty participating in the CRECD program from MSM and experts from collaborating
institutions.
Eligibility and Selection: For applicants to be eligible for the MCTR scholars program, they must either be trainees currently enrolled in accredited graduate, medical or postdoctoral programs, faculty, or community physicians across the A-CTSI. Categories of trainees eligible for participation include medical students in their clerkship rotations, residents, postdoctoral fellows from both basic and clinical science disciplines, faculty from both basic and clinical disciplines, nurses and community physicians. For trainees currently enrolled in accredited programs, priority will be given to candidates closest to completion of their clinical or research training, such as medical students involved in senior clerkships, residents in their third and fourth years of training; clinical fellows in their research blocks; and fellows in the third or fourth year of post-doctoral training. Applicants will be required to provide: statement on research focus, CV, statement of career goals and why they wish to enroll, and program/division.
Program Coordination: The Multidisciplinary Clinical and Translational Research (MCTR) Certificate Program will be directed by Dr. Elizabeth Ofili (CRECD PI and Program Director) and Dr. Alexander Quarshie (CRECD Associate Director and Co-Director of Education component of A-CTSI). They will be assisted by Ms. Jacquelyn Ali, CRECD program manager, and a TBN program assistant to coordinate the activities of the MCTR program.
