Clinical Research Education and Career Development (CRECD), Phase II
Phase II of this program is designed to promote and enhance the development of successful clinical and translational researchers. Phase II awards will support the career development of CRECD Phase II candidates for up to two years. A number of career development activities is implemented to increase the success of our trainees in obtaining external funding to support further career development and/or clinical research (e.g., K23 or K08 or foundation career development award or other type of federal funding) before the end of 2 years of funding under the Phase II Program. Successful candidates would graduate from the program at the time of their external research funding.
Selection of Phase II Candidates
All phase II applicants must be either CRECD scholars who are MSCR graduates or current
CRECD Phase I scholars who are about to graduate. MSCR graduates who serve as principal
investigators on pilot projects for Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI),
Institutional Development Award (IDeA) or other NIH-funded programs are not eligible
for the Phase II CRECD award. Eligible Phase II candidates will submit the following
to the CRECD admissions committee for review and recommendation to program committee
for selection based on the following criteria:
- Mentored research proposal: This must include a statement from the candidate’s lead mentor outlining his/her role, facilities and resources that will be provided to support the research endeavor. It must include research training and career development plan, as well as the candidate’s research training/career development accomplishments. Proposals that address areas such as health disparities, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, aging, reproductive medicine, mental health/psychiatric disorders, drug abuse and addiction will be given high priority.
- Publication track record and preliminary data from Mentored project that could support a K award A letter of support from departmental chair documenting the provision of a minimum of 75% protected time to conduct the proposed research if accepted.
- Submissions for eligible Phase I candidates must be done at least 3 months prior to MSCR graduation. Potential applicants are also encouraged to meet with the Program Director prior to submitting an application. Selection and support for the mentored Phase II candidates is contingent upon review and final approval by the program committee.
