MSM on a Mission
Dr. Xueying Zhao was recently awarded a $1.42 million grant from the National Institutes of Health,
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIH-NIDDK). Obesity
and type 2 diabetes affect one third of adult Americans, and are the leading causes
of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation. In
the USA, African Americans are over represented in the ESRD population and therefore
are at higher risk for this condition. The proposed research will help to develop
new therapeutic strategies to prevent and treat diabetic kidney disease in humans
by examining the role of kidney injury molecule-1 in the pathogenesis of kidney injury
and dysfunction in diabetes.
Dr. Dong Liu was recently awarded a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health,
National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NIH/NHLBI). This project is titled "Microvesicles
from Adipose-derived Stem Cells for Ischemic Heart Repair." The worldwide epidemic
of ischemic heart diseases urgently requires innovative treatments in spite of the
significant advances in medical, interventional and surgical therapy for these diseases.
This proposal will investigate the therapeutic potential and molecular mechanisms
of stem cell-released microvesicles for ischemic heart diseases.
On May 21, 2016, Dr. L. Ray Matthews's nephew Matthew Moore (Union Grove High School), who has benefited from Dr. Matthews's
pioneering vitamin D research which helps reduce sports injuries and improve athletic
performance, broke the 20-year-old Georgia boys high school record in the 110 meter
hurdles with a time of 13.33. <<MORE>>
